Lafayette New Jersey woman mauled by black bear

A New Jersey woman was mauled by a black bear as she went to her mailbox Wednesday afternoon, state officials said.

The 34-year-old woman was walking along Gorney Road in Lafayette around 4:30 p.m. to check her mail when she encountered a trio of black bears, the New Jersey Department of Environmental Protection (DEP) said.

DEP spokesman Larry Hajna told Patch.com that one of the bears, described as a young animal weighing 150 to 200 pounds, charged at her.

The woman suffered non-life-threatening injuries to her right arm and buttock.

The bears ran away after a driver scared them off by honking a car horn, Hajna said.

The victim of the bear attack was treated and released from the hospital by Thursday afternoon.

In the aftermath of the mauling, the DEP has rigged a trap for the bear, which will be euthanized if caught.

Wednesday’s incident marked the third bear encounter in Sussex County so far this year.

Two pet dogs were killed by bears in Sparta less than three weeks apart in January.

Earlier this week, DEP officials finally removed a plastic cone-shaped chicken feeder from the neck of an 89-pound female bear after seven months.
