Texas DPS slams Uvalde school police chief Pete Arrendondo

In the first public hearing since the Uvalde school shooting, the Texas Department of Public Safety categorically blamed the Uvalde school police chief for the botched law enforcement response at Robb Elementary School where 19 students and two teachers were killed.

“The only thing stopping a hallway of dedicated officers from entering room 111 and 112 was the on-scene commander who decided to place the lives of officers before the lives of children”, said Texas DPS Director Steve McCraw as he testified before a Texas Senate committee.

Three minutes after the shooting started, nine officers who were ready to go into the classroom and take out the shooter were ready to go and could have stopped the gunman, 18-year-old Salvador Ramos, McCraw said.

The head of DPS left no question that Uvalde Consolidated ISD Police Chief Pete Arrendondo was the incident commander– something Arredondo was disputed.

Arredondo is on the list of speakers to testify later today before the same committee.

“You’re the incident commander,” said McCraw the Texas Senate committed. “Terrible decisions were made by the on-scene commander.”

The committee hearing is on-going. This story will be continuously updated.
